GLOBAL ETHICS FOR A HUMANE WORLD
Issue II: Global Ethics and Sustainable Development Date: 14-15 & 18 February 2002
NOTICE: we are talking here about integral, immersive, embodied frames for pinpointing matters and issues which can help the humane prospectus (see Noel Browns outline of the Earth Summit in Rio 1992 outcomes.
Building and Sharing COMMON FRAMES OF REFERENCE for GLOBAL ETHICS
or an OPTICS OF ETHICS as presented in 1995 in Nairobi for the WORLD FUTURES STUDIES FEDERATION.
The philosopher Hans Jonas saw a NEW ETHICS being concrete only with "Time and Space Horizons" (only in German and the need to add to these dimensions a third one, called: subjects, cultures or disciplines, or better thematic diversity. This are the dimensions of ecological thinking and were used to build in 1990, an exponat for a GLOBAL CHANGE exhibition in order to be able to point at, outline and see in context, in one framework or model, our positions and perspectives, in order to be able to relate and contextualize NORMS and VALUES.
What we feel we need to do here is a bridge between words and cultures, to have common references or models to be able to agree upon them. This by the way was what Noel Brown, UNEP, saw as the basic outcome of the Earth Summit process and what is used as an "Order-Realm" for survey- or overview- knowledge, to help us discuss and share other and extra dimensions "along and across scales and times". We work since 10 years with these concepts in curriculum development, discussing with youth "Global Issues" and try to include it into the design of "Situation Rooms". My answer to the Question "IS HUMANITY DESTINED …? by Lynton Caldwell in his "POLICY and LIFE SCIENCE Magazine" round-table was "Show or Schau? - maybe you want to dig with me "deeper"!?, check out our "INTEGRAL AGENDA" , …
So if you are interested in how the work mentioned above came about, you will see that it has to do with "having no words" and no way to present issues across all "levels", or by being unable to ask simple questions, like what is space, what is "spacial" in contrast to spatial , and how we can share beyond the need to be right or wrong what is the context of values and norms in teh debate about "ethics"?
Prerequisite for sharing common frames of reference and a global ethics is "re-inventing dialogue and governance/democracy, a form of DIALOGUE CULTURE, a way were we can keep dominant "talkers" in "check" and co-creatively listen and form new alliances. See: Dialogue Culture the Open-Forum . Maybe you want to see how storytelling can bring new/old insights by providing old/new "solutions" or approaches. I invite you to vitist a paper presnted at the first WORLD ETHICS conference, where a story form 1001 nights provide a solution we can summarize under SOCIAL SYSTEM DESIGN or COMMUNITY BUILDING (sorry only available in German .
